One World Week at Brunel University

Brunel University logoThere’s only one world…

Every year Brunel organises a One World Week to celebrate the diverse international community we have at the University. This year’s event held in January, was bigger and better than ever, with international food stalls and cookery events, a Chinese New Year Lion dance, flamenco dancers, music, arts and sports contests, to name just a few of the attractions.

Amongst the highlights was a much-anticipated Ready Steady Cook event between the Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Jenks and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Rob Macredie. Armed with bags of food, a well-stocked kitchen and student assistants, Athena and Goldbert, they had 20 minutes in which to produce the most impressive dishes.

Following his triumph, The Vice-Chancellor summed up the unique event: “The international flavour of One World Week was certainly reflected in the international flavour of the food. I enjoyed it very much and will definitely take part again next year.”

Another highlight was the living statue of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous Victorian engineer that the University is named after.

Departments around the University were also invited to decorate their offices for a competition called “Colours of the World”. Brunel International won this year’s contest. Brunel International used “Around the World in 80 Days” as their theme and decorated each office to represent a different nation. Amongst these were India, Egypt, Australia, China, Vietnam and Africa…
