Newcastle University
A university of distinction
Newcastle University is a member of the elite Russell Group, an association of leading research-intensive universities. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 also reaffirmed our position as one of the UK’s top 20 research institutions with ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ research in all 38 of our subject areas. Our graduates also have an enviable employment record – 97.88% of our UK and EU postgraduates progressed to employment or further study within the first six months of graduating.
At our compact, city centre campus we offer a range of taught programmes and research degrees in the following subject areas: arts and humanities; biological, environmental and agricultural sciences; biomedicine; business, finance and management; education, communication and language sciences; engineering and computing science; physical and mathematical sciences; social sciences and law.
International centre for culture
Heritage, language, music and the arts are an important part of our research and teaching portfolio. We have recently opened a new £4.5million music building which has 24-hour practice rooms, including a large ensemble/band room, and studios equipped with state-of-the-art technology for sound synthesis, composition and recording. We are also a major partner in the Great North Museum: Hancock. The Museum houses internationally acclaimed natural history, archaeological and ethnographic collections.
Science and engineering
Our taught and research programmes are designed to meet the current and future needs of the science, agriculture and engineering industries and we work closely with industry, government departments and communities to develop innovative solutions. Our main research themes are: energy and providing a lead in the development of future low-carbon economies; environment and finding sustainable solutions through the study of urban, rural and marine environments; information and the need to address a range of societal challenges; nanoscience and nanotechnology and how it can be applied for societal and economic benefit.
