New research opportunities at UEA
UEA's Faculty of Social Sciences and the OU are offering up to 11 fully-funded PhD studentships in subjects including law, international development, economics, geography, education, and social work and psychology. The partnership betrween UEA and OU was formed in 2009 with the intent to build on their status as two of the UK’s leading research institutions. The collaboration is offering studentships hosted within the individual universities but with academic support from the other partner and access to the wide training opportunities available across both institutions. Professor Neil Ward, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UEA, says, 'We are pleased to be able to offer these studentships, which provide an excellent opportunity for promising postgraduates to train as social science researchers. The partnership between UEA and the OU will significantly enhance the postgraduate research experience by giving students the opportunity to benefit from a more diverse range of training environments and expertise across both institutions.' He continues, 'The combination of a strengthened emphasis on interdisciplinary training and access to a wide range of opportunities to engage with external research partners in their own and in associated fields will better enable students to develop research that meets the real-world challenges of today.' The University of East Anglia has been identified as one of the leading research institutions in the UK, following the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 50% of its research activity deemed to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, and 87% in total being of ‘international standing’. The results of the 2008 RAE also confirmed the quality and stature of The Open University and its research, with more than 50% rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. The three-year studentships cover UK/EU tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £13,290 per year), and a research training support grant. Candidates should hold a good first degree and a taught Masters with research methods. The application deadline is Thursday 27th May. Click here for more information.
