New mock court room for law students at Portsmouth

University logoA mock court room with facilities comparable to a real court of law will open in autumn 2009. Students at the University of Portsmouth will use it to practise advocacy and stage full-blown mock trials.

Interviewed in the University’s UPDate magazine Caroline Strevens, Head of the School of Law, said: ‘The mock courtroom will be as close as possible to a real court of law. "Clients" can give video testimony via audio visual facilities, whilst court proceedings can be filmed and simultaneously fed into nearby teaching rooms or recorded for future use and analysis. The jury retiring room is also fitted with video equipment so jury deliberations can be recorded and analysed.'

Other developments include a Clinic for people needing advice about employment law and the ‘Innocence Project’, where students investigate potential miscarriages of justice under the supervision of solicitors.
