Few professionals are properly equipped to engage creatively with the challenges and complexity of 21st century cities, towns and villages, but a new Masters course in Urban Design at the University of Portsmouth is changing that.
Urban design is the art of making places that are practical and pleasant; places that are successful both socially and economically, good to live in and attractive to visit.
Tutor Dr Fabiano Lemes de Oliveira, said: “Urban design is becoming increasingly important as our urban landscape faces new and increasing pressures from all quarters.
“The urban designer needs to deal with the changing nature of the urban environment and stand up for sustainable design. They also need to promote cultural diversity, social equity and the economic development of cities.”
The course is aimed at recent graduates who want to specialise in urban design as well as professionals in related areas who wish to build upon their knowledge and skills in designing the contemporary built environment.
Students will learn about history and theory of urban design, as well as all aspects related to the practice of urban design.
The MA Urban Design is one of three new Master’s programmes being launched by the Portsmouth School of Architecture in 2010. Also available are the MA Sustainable Architecture and the MA in Interior Design.
