New Master’s in Interior Design – symbiosis between architect and designer

University of Portsmouth logoOnce upon a time, not so long ago, the first time an interior designer met the architect of a building project could be at the building’s opening. But the launch of a brand new course in interior design marks the beginning of an integrated approach to the subject from the University of Portsmouth.

MA Interior Design students are working and studying alongside urban designers in an endeavour to create a new generation of designers with a multi-faceted approach to their subject.

Course tutor Belinda MitchellThe aim is for students to better understand the ways in which the disciplines cross over and the demands placed on the different professions. Students investigate the built environment as a whole which will help inform their approach to the interior.

Interviewed in the University’s UPDate Magazine, course tutor Belinda Mitchell said that the inter-disciplinary approach is one of the courses main strengths.

She said: 'It challenges the way we practice and stimulates debate. The students explore the nature of a room or space together and develop their ideas through discussion and analysis of how the different scales of practice – urban, interior or product – affect each other.'

The MA in Interior Design is one of three new Master’s programmes being launched by the Portsmouth School of Architecture in 2010. Also available are MA Sustainable Architecture and MA Urban Design.
