New MSc in Sustainable Community Design launched at Heriot-Watt

Heriot-Watt University logoA brand new MSc course has been designed by the School of the Built Environment at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. This unique course is offered in partnership with Findhorn Ecovillage in the north of Scotland. It aims to train graduates in aspects of ecologically sound settlement design whilst offering practical hands on experience in a real environment.

Students in labThe course is offered either part time over two years, or through flexible distance learning to suit people who are working full time. There is a variety of modules available which can be tailored to suit the interests of each student ranging from planning and community themes to construction and building performance issues. The multi-disciplinary approach of the course also means that graduates from a wide range of backgrounds can apply. Both part time and distance learning students take part in a three week residential course at Findhorn Ecovillage.

Heriot-Watt University has a strong reputation for its teaching and research in the area of sustainable design with staff members who are internationally recognised for their expertise including Professor Sue Roaf an award winning architect, and Dr Doug Harris who is a representative for the Energy Institute.
