Liverpool Hope honours iconic LiverpudlianLiverpool Hope University has honoured Ken Dodd, one of Liverpool’s most iconic characters, in recognition of his contributions to cultural life in the city and beyond for over 50 years, at the university's Foundation Day celebrations. Ken was awarded a Doctorate of Letters (honoris causa) as part of the University’s annual celebrations, which took place in the recently re-opened Hope Chapel at the Hope Park campus. Reading the citation, Professor Bill Chambers (Pro-Vice Chancellor, External Participation & Widening Participation), said: 'There is much more to Ken Dodd than mere fame and celebrity. The reasons why Liverpool Hope is proud to award a Degree of Doctor of Letters go far beyond this public persona. Most of Ken Dodd’s qualities are those which we aim to instil into our Hope graduates.' Professor Chambers continued, 'Ken works tirelessly, frequently and often anonymously supporting charities big and small, national and local. His freely given and generous support of local charities such as Claire House Hospice is legendary as is his own charity The Ken Dodd Charitable Trust.' 'Finally, this degree is in recognition of his faith, which underpins his life. It is fitting that Ken Dodd receives his honorary doctorate on the University's Foundation Day when we remember our founding Anglican and Catholic Colleges and reflect on our mission as the only ecumenical University in Europe.'
