Leeds is offering full scholarships

The University of Leeds is offering full-fees ‘Bauman’ scholarships for September 2011.

The School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds is delighted to announce two new scholarships at the Bauman Institute and invites applications for funding from UK students commencing study in September 2011.

The two awards covering the full cost of fees is available for students on either of the Bauman Institute’s MA programmes:

MA International Social Transformation
MA Social and Political Thought

These awards were established in honour of Leeds' Emeritus Professor, Zygmunt Bauman, and the Bauman Institute is a new international research and teaching centre dedicated to addressing key social problems that affect rapidly changing societies across the globe.

The primary research interests are informed by the concerns of Professor Bauman’s sociology, namely consumerism, globalisation, ethics, uncertainty, and the analysis of modernity.

Both of these MA programmes allow students to be actively involved in directing their own learning, principally through a principle of ‘negotiated assessment’ to encourage students to pursue their own research into topics of interests. With a commitment to critical thinking, the programmes strike a balance between the obvious value of theoretical reflection with the analysis of concrete social and political problems in a rapidly changing world.

These two masters programmes will be of particular interest to sociologists, social and political theorists, and cultural studies students, as well as anyone with an interest in critical thinking across the arts, humanities and social sciences.
