King’s College London recently named Chris Mottershead as Vice-Principal of Research and Innovation.
Currently Mr Mottershead serves as British Petroleum’s Distinguished Advisor for Energy Security and Climate Change.
He will be taking over the research and commercialisation portfolio at the College from Professor Sir Lawrence Freedman, who will continue in his position as one of five Vice-Principals, with a remit to focus on special projects.
Chris has advanced his career with BP since 1978, and since 2004 has advised the energy firm’s executive management and governments on a range of strategic issues, including long term energy security and climate change.
Prior to this, he served as Technology Vice-President, responsible for oversight of research, engineering, operational and construction activities of the firm’s global gas, power and renewables businesses.
Mr Mottershead is an alumnus of the College; he was awarded a degree in Applied Physics and an MSc in Cybernetics from Chelsea College, which merged with King’s in 1985.
He is a non-executive Director of the Carbon Trust, a member of the Advisory Board of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (US) and the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) User Panel.
Chris Mottershead commented, 'Needless to say, I am very excited at the prospect of joining one of the world’s leading universities:
King’s appears to be making huge advances at the moment, and there could be no better time to get involved in the increasingly competitive world of international academic research.'
Commenting on the newly appointed Vice-President, Principal Professor Rick Trainor added, 'I am delighted that Chris will be joining the senior management team at King’s. Cutting edge research and innovation leads and informs all our activities and I have every confidence that his experience in industry and his wide range of international contacts will help develop our research and commercialisation profile significantly.'
