Exeter proposes Environmental and Sustainability Institute brinigng critical focus to environmental change

The Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI), which will be based at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus, seeks to generate world-class research into the causes and consequences of environmental change and how to manage its effects, technologically, politically, economically, socially and behaviourally.

The Institute is committed to addressing the translation of cutting-edge environmental research into economic growth, addressing how businesses can adapt to climate change and also how they might change their organisations and operation to mitigate against future climate change.

The planned future development of the ESI represents part of the third phase of growth at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall Campus, located in the countryside near the famed Cornish coast. It will form the hub of the University-wide science theme ‘Climate Change and Sustainable Futures.’

ESI research will concentrate on the expected impacts of environmental and climactic  change on the natural world and society at-large. Two major issues which will gain significant attention are how society will adapt to the changes which will inevitably occur given the scale of emission of greenhouse gases and how global society might change to reduce our impact on the environment. In other words, how do we mitigate further change. These questions will require both substantial research and rapid translation into businesses. A key mission of ESI is to assist businesses to manage this change.
