With over 800 students enrolled at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) from 120 different countries, this small but friendly university has a unique multicultural mix and an excellent reputation for the support it gives to international students.
The academic and welfare support at UWIC make it a popular place to study and 'overseas student numbers have grown by over 30% in the last three years' (www.uwic.ac.uk).
UWIC’s International Student Welfare Office Team is aware that many international students will face cultural differences when coming to the UK for the first time and so UWIC is able to help them overcome these differences and adapt to their new environment.
UWIC’s first-rate reputation for the invaluable support it offers international students can be attributed to
the International Student Welfare Office Team’s dedicated members of staff, who are always available to offer a wide range of services to international students, including:
• Accommodation help
• An Airport Welcome Service
• An Orientation Programme
• Help with finding a job
• Help with money and finances
• Information about the UK health services
• Religion
• Shopping
• Study skills and English language support
• Travelling
• Visa and immigration advice
A contributing factor to the success of the International Student Welfare Office Team is the employment of 'Student Helpers'. Our Helpers, who are all current UWIC students and who have become accustomed to life as a student in the UK, work with us throughout our most busy times and are excellent ambassadors of UWIC. New international students take comfort from our Helpers knowing that they have all settled happily into UWIC.
The International Student Welfare Office Team is also responsible for making new international students to UWIC feel exceptionally welcome on arrival to the UK. To welcome students to our well-reputed MBA in January 2009, the International Student Welfare Office Team organised an entertaining evening in the historic grounds of Cardiff Castle. Students were also taken on a tour of Cardiff City Centre, a shopping trip to a local supermarket and a visit to London – the capital of England.
