Edge Hill University marked its 125th anniversary with a big celebration in Liverpool, the city where it first opened in 1885 with only 41 students. Having moved to Ormskirk in 1933, Edge Hill University now has over 23,000 students and boasts a spectacular award-winning campus and a nomination for University of the Year.
The University started out as a teacher training college, after seven Liverpool philanthropists founded an institution to 'radically broaden access to the teaching profession'. The college moved to Ormskirk in 1933, after which a period of sustained capital and course development saw the University expanding the campus and diversifying its range of courses in health, arts and sciences. Today, the University offers over 130 courses to students from around the world.
To celebrate its history and development the University has a year-long programme of events planned for 2010 entitled ‘Shaping Futures'. High profile speakers will explore the issues that will shape and transform the lives of the next generation.
University alumni Stuart Maconie and Jonathan Pryce will mark the anniversary, as well as comedian Jon Culshaw. For more information about Edge Hill University visit edgehill.ac.uk/125 or follow us on Twitter.
