Deadline approaching for University of Kent brain studentship!

Apply to the University of Kent now for an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)/ Medical Research Council (MRC) 3 year studentship: The Social Guilt Hypothesis and the Brain: Behavioural Neuroscience Approaches.

The studentship will be undertaken under the supervision of Dr Roger Giner-Sorolla at the University of Kent’s Centre for the Study of Group Processes (CSGP) within the School of Psychology, starting in September 2010. Also collaborating on the research project are Professor Mark van Vugt (Free University of Amsterdam) and Dr Stuart Derbyshire (University of Birmingham).

Although the studentship is based at the University of Kent, at least one month each year will be spent in training and research at the University of Birmingham’s imaging facility, and there will also be opportunities to visit the Free University of Amsterdam.

UK citizens with settled status, EU citizens resident in Britain for three or more years, and other nationalities who meet a more restrictive UK residency requirement, are eligible to apply. The studentship covers tuition fees (Home/EU rate) and an enhanced maintenance grant at standard ESRC rates. Incidental costs of travel to the other sites of the grant team will also be paid.

The university is inviting applications from students with a good academic background (top two grade categories) and it is an advantage for the applicant to have a Master’s degree in Psychology by September 2010. Experience in conducting quantitative psychological research, data analysis, and academic writing is required. Desirable areas of experience are: fMRI imaging; behavioural experiments in social psychology; and research in emotions, especially self-conscious emotions. The applicant’s academic excellence, and other indicators of motivation for a research career, will also be strongly considered.

The University of Kent offers a supportive, dynamic and diverse environment for creative research and learning across our research groups in social, cognitive, forensic and developmental psychology. Resources include a participant pool, computerised research labs with social and cognitive psychology suites, and facilities for physiological measurement including eye tracking, Biopac and EEG.
