Crime under the microscope at Portsmouth

A forensic house which can be used to re-enact crimes including domestic violence and murder as well as cyber crimes such as identity theft is being used by hundreds of students at the University of Portsmouth.

The house gives students from a wide range of courses – from computing and psychology to earth sciences and entomology – an ideal environment for studying crime scene detection. Students can use the one-bedroom house, adjacent wasteland and a van parked nearby to analyse staged crime scenes. CCTV cameras in the bedroom, sitting room and kitchen ‘capture’ students working so their skills and methods can be reviewed with lecturers.

For criminology students, the house will be a tool to test their perceptions of crime scenes and help them learn how to record accurately what they see. Earth science students will analyse material such as mineral particles in soil samples. Computing students will recover and analyse data from the computer in the house and on mobile phones at the scene, as well as examining information such as till receipts and other documents.
