Cranfield's student-run charity supported by Secret Millionaire

Channel 4’s Secret Millionaire, Dawn Gibbins, is going to visit Cranfield University to support its student-led charity.

Dawn Gibbins, the well-known secret millionaire philanthropist, is visiting Cranfield University this month to head up a seminar raising awareness of the international development work of student charity Silsoe Aid for Appropriate Development (SAFAD), a registered charity run entirely by students of the university.

She will be joined by representatives from Save the Children and WaterAid to raise awareness of the urgent need for action to reduce the the huge amount of unnecessary deaths in developing countries attributable to inadequate and unsuitable water supply - the United Nations reported an astounding 1.2million child deaths annually in developing countries due to poor quality water!

Cranfield has a reputation in water research in developing countries, and students from around the world have joined its postgraduate environmental and water courses over the years to gain specialist expertise to facilitate the humanitarian programmes supported by UK and other international NGO’s.

SAFAD has a 40 year tradition in sending many of the students trained at Cranfield University to international clean water and other humanitarian programmes where they are put to work directly to help those in most need.

The free seminar is being held on the evening of Monday 18th April 2011 at Cranfield University. It is a great opportunity for anyone interested in improving access to clean, safe, water in developing countries to gain further insight into the work of SAFAD, as well as to share the company of philanthropist Ms Gibbins.
