Cranfield University forges links with Libyan university on environmental issues
Libya is currently facing desertification and accelerated soil erosion. The North African country has limited natural fresh water resources, and deforestation is also a pressing environmental issue. Dr Zeinab Altarqi, a Cranfield alumni at Omar Al-Mukhtar University, approached Cranfield University to set up a Memorandum of Understanding for the exchange of knowledge between the two universities. Through this agreement, Cranfield University will be collaborating with Omar Al-Mukhtar University, initially on the identification of fundamental knowledge gaps and researchable issues. Education and training through MSc study and research will be a key focus, with an emphasis on identifying and addressing the challenges associated with the restoration and long-term establishment of natural forest in the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar region of Libya.
