Academic strengths and quality programmes
As the University for business and the professions, City is already well positioned to educate students to work in internationalised labour markets, professions and organisations that must increasingly adapt to cross-border professional practice.

One-third of the University’s academic activity is business related, including a world-class Business School. Another third is health, including nursing, optometry and food policy. The final third includes computing, mathematics, engineering, law, social sciences and creative and cultural subjects.

Research
City has a strong research focus and is actively involved in pioneering research and continues to break new ground in academic thought and study. Amongst our staff, City has some of the world’s leading researchers, who demonstrate their contributions to society through knowledge exchange with business, industry and the professions and the academic community.

• Over 80% of submitted research is recognised internationally and 15 recognised as world leading quality

The University has more than 60 research centres, groups and units which bring together expertise from various Schools and Departments in key areas, providing an excellent base for undergraduate and postgraduate study.

Interdisciplinary research and teaching has been a major strength at City for many years. In 2008, a strategic decision was taken to make significant investment in interdisciplinary activity through the establishment of six new centres which aim to increase collaborative teaching and research across its Schools as well as make a significant contribution to the University’s strategic goals and build stronger links with industry and academia.
