Breakfast at the BBC for London Met student Peter Kirkham

Peter KirkhamLondon Metropolitan University PhD student Peter Kirkham appeared on BBC1’s Breakfast programme on Tuesday 19 July to give his expert opinion on the News International phone hacking scandal.

Peter is studying for a Professional Doctorate in Policing, Security and Community Safety with London Met’s Criminology department.

An expert in fraud, public perceptions of fraud and the way data is used in crime reporting, Peter was invited onto the famous sofa to discuss the ongoing scandal.

Speaking with Breakfast favourites Bill and Sian, Peter gave a lively and informative overview regarding the role of the police in the controversy, and the impact of sudden and intense media coverage on operational policing.

Peter said: “The vast majority of police officers are of high integrity, and tell journalists offering bribes to go away in no uncertain terms.

“Counter-terrorism isn’t a game. Two senior policemen have had to resign because of the distractions brought about by high profile media coverage preventing them from carrying out their duties”.

Peter is a former Detective Chief Inspector in the Metropolitan Police. As part of his studies at London Met, Peter is currently working on a thesis about the interaction between published official data and government trend reports, and their impact on public perceptions of crime.

Dr Nick Ridley, Senior Lecturer in Policing and Security at London Met, and course leader of the Professional Doctorate in Policing said: “Peter has been an able and diligent student throughout his time here and has been of tremendous benefit to the course and his fellow students.

“He is always willing to help others and has acted as a mentor to some of our international students.

“His appearance on BBC Breakfast reflects his expertise in his field and we’re proud that he’s studying with London Metropolitan University”.

Peter’s interview was broadcast live at 7.20am on Tuesday 19 July. He appeared alongside the well known lawyer and author Geoffrey Robertson QC.
