The University of Bath has been awarded 55 studentships worth over £600,000 by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This funding will run between 2009 and
2013 and subsidize student fees and living costs during postgraduate study at the University.
Of the 55 students to be funded, 50 will be reading for the internationally recognised Masters programme in Interpreting & Translation. The programme trains professional interpreters and translators to work in European institutions including the European Parliament, the European Commission and for the United Nations.
Elena Kidd, Director of Studies of Postgraduate Interpreting & Translation, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded 10 studentships a year.
“There is a chronic shortage in European institutions of native English interpreters and translators where the ever increasing number of documents produced by these institutions needs to be disseminated in English. This award recognised the importance of this profession and the high esteem in which the AHRC holds Bath.”
The AHRC award also recognised the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering (CASA), which received awards for its Masters programmes in conservation of historic gardens and cultural landscapes, and in historic buildings.
Professor Paul Richens, said: “We are pleased that the AHRC recognises the excellent reputation and environment that CASA provides for its postgraduates.”
