Bath appoints new professor for clinical psychology
For the last ten years Professor Salkovskis has worked at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, and he has been clinical director of the Maudsley Hospital’s Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma. The Department of Psychology at the University of Bath, in association with the School for Health, was recently selected as the provider of a new Doctoral programme in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych) in partnership with Avon, Wiltshire & Gloucestershire NHS regions. This initiative will ensure the development of closer links between the university and the health service - and Professor Salkovskis is the first of several appointments to these developments. DClinPsych programmes provide a professional qualification and give eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist and Health Professionals Council Practitioner status, which enables graduates to meet the standards required to work within the National Health Service and to develop specialist research and clinical skills. There are currently 31 programmes in the UK. Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath, Professor Glynis Breakwell, said, 'I am delighted that Professor Salkovskis is leading this important new programme at Bath. This is part of a major research and training initiative across the South West region, forming part of the University’s strategic development in Clinical and Health Psychology.' Professor Bas Verplanken, Head of Department of Psychology, said, 'This development will build upon our already considerable existing strengths across the range of applied psychology such as in education and physical health. We are particularly excited by the possibilities for synergy between these developments in Clinical Psychology and our acclaimed Health Psychology training programme.' Commenting on his new appointment, Professor Salkovskis said that his aim will be to 'build upon existing strengths in the University and region in order to ensure innovative programmes of research and training in Clinical Psychology of the highest quality. The development of a centre of excellence in Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath will bring together the best of applied research and clinical practice.' The University of Bath has announced the appointment of Professor Paul Salkovskis as Programme Director of the forthcoming Doctorate programme in Clinical Psychology - the intention is that he will lead research and training development in this field.
